Suicide is a growing public health issue that is gaining attention both nationally and locally in the State of Utah. In this presentation, we will review suicide data in Utah, discuss what may cause someone to have thoughts of suicide, and ways to support those who may be experiencing a mental health crisis -- with tips for workplaces and special considerations for suicide prevention during COVID-19.

Allison Foust, MHA, CHES, serves as the Suicide Prevention Administrator at the Utah Department of Human Services (DHS) in the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH). Allison provides oversight for the state coalition, the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition, and is responsible for implementation of the Utah Suicide Prevention State Plan. She works to guide and support community leaders and organizations by engaging them in evidence-based strategies. Allison is a Certified Health Education Specialist and holds a Master's degree in Health Administration from Weber State University.

Amy Mikkelsen holds her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Utah and has worked in public health for over 12 years primarily in prevention, education, and collaboration with community partners. Amy is a Primary Prevention Coordinator at the Utah Department of Health and a subject matter expert in suicide prevention. In this role, she supports both statewide and local efforts to build capacity to catalyze comprehensive suicide prevention across Utah. Her goal is to create sustainable change to reduce suicide rates and to shift the conversation around suicide and mental health.
